Full Review of Bernie’s Backyard – Grand Opening Event on July 25th

Spring, Texas – July 21st: Grand Opening Celebration of Bernie’s Backyard super food truck park goes from 11am – 10pm on Saturday, July 25th. Great food, good fun and Spring’s newest destination for the whole family.

Bernie’s Backyard sits on 5 acres and has 7 different food trucks that will be conveniently located near Old Town Spring on the northbound feeder of Interstate 45 just past Spring Stubener but before the new Grand Parkway.  Bernie’s is going to be a family destination. At the front of the property there is Bernie’s Icehouse, an indoor bar with plenty of seating, dartboards and some popular arcade style games. Bernie’s has plenty of parking and a lot of room to expand, with things like the upcoming Sweet Shoppe with ice cream, cakes and candy with a nostalgic feel.  Bernie’s Backyard is a brand new concept for the area.  Bernie’s is much more than a food truck park; it’s a destination for the whole family. It has beer and wines for the adults, shave ice for the kids, an outdoor stage with entertainment and a climate-controlled patio with four TV’s. In addition, The Feast of Artisans Farmer’s Market will be out there weekly and they have plans for car shows, live music, crawfish boils, corporate events and even a beer fest.

The food trucks surround the stage area with outdoor covered & uncovered seating, bathrooms and even a hand washing station. Too hot to sit outside? Grab your food and bring it in to the air-conditioned area of the icehouse with TV’s and a digital jukebox. Go ahead and enjoy your food with an ice-cold beer or an adult frozen beverage. Adjacent to the icehouse is a nice size deck with chairs and tables. Overall, Bernie’s is already a hit in my opinion. The layout is great, the vibe is cool and laid back and the food trucks are all top notch.

The soft opening began July third and will continue through July 24th. Their operating hours will be Tuesday through Thursday 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m and Friday and Saturday 11:00am to 10:00 pm. Bernie’s Backyard has enough different cuisines to entice everyone’s palate. They range from gourmet burgers, loaded French fries, Italian street food, Korean fusion, American fare, BBQ and desserts. Spring, TX is very lucky to have the following line up of food trucks, some that are award winning along with a few newcomers.

TRUCK # 1 Black Garlic

Cuisine:  Gourmet burgers, appetizers and sides using the best ingredients, such as Prime Natural Angus and American style Kobe beef hand-made patties, farm fresh local produce, craft made bread, and house made cheese. You can taste of all of their different ingredients sourced from right here in the Lone Star State. None of their meats or vegetables are ever frozen. They even source some of the best of Texas cheese and use Houston Dairy Maids products.

What You Need To Know: Bring your appetite; these burgers are not for the faint of heart. Popular items are the Sauced Pretzel – custom ground 1/2 pound patty, blue cheese and Artisan bacon topped with fried kale and tucked between a grilled custom pretzel bun. The Pretzeled Cow – custom ground 1/2 pound patty, artisan bacon, sweet caramelized onions, local cheddar with pancetta on a grilled custom pretzel bun and the Arancini Di Buffalo – golden risotto balls stuffed with mozzarella, cheddar and buffalo sauce.  Appetizers like the Buffalo Chicken, with a side of bleu cheese and the Grilled Chimi Chicken Wings – 8 grilled wings tossed in BG Sauce and chimichurri.

TRUCK # 2: The Naked Fry

Cuisine: Topped French fries. The Naked Fry is all about fries. Naked Fries, Twister Fries, Crispy Fries, Sticky Fries, Smothered Fries. Come try our gourmet take on fries

What You Need To Know: Three different styles of fries to choose from (twister, skinny or sweet potato). You can get them plain with sea salt or choose from one of their over the top loaded fries.  The Buffalo Express – buffalo aioli, crispy chicken, blue cheese crumbles, blue cheese sauce, fried kale and ranch. The Truck Load – truck sauce, cheddar cheese, candied bacon, cream and chives. Frito Lane – Frito pie, truck sauce, Texas chili, crema, sweet onions and Fritos. Do you feel like getting a little crazier? If so, then how about the Sweet Home Alabama – caramel, marshmallows, cinnamon, sugar and chocolate sauce!

Truck # 3 Rustica Italian

Cuisine: Matt Vernon and Mary Spessato own Rustica Italian street food. It is family owned and operated.  Both of them have been serving high quality Italian fare in North Houston for several years and are very excited to be invited to be a part of Bernie’s Backyard. They believe in fresh, high quality dishes and believe good food makes for a good life.

What You Need To Know: One of their many traditional Italian specialties is Pasticcio Alla Bolognese (which is some of the best lasagna I have ever had). Their signature dish is Rustica, a pastry filled with your choice of creamy sautéed spinach or ham, mushroom and béchamel. Rustica also offer a pizza served focaccia style, Paninis with a variety of sauces served with eggplant fries or French fries. Their homemade baked meatballs in sauce are excellent.

Truck # 4 BBQ Godfather

This is a unique fusion using the best of Italian, Spanish and Southwestern US BBQ styles and takes from the best of several regional BBQ techniques with fantastic results. Tony Faour has been turning out excellent BBQ in this area for a long time and has a strong following.  They are part of your community. This unique style is one of a kind and you have to taste it to understand it. The meats are very well seasoned with a nice smokey flavor.

BBQ Godfather uses the highest quality meats and vegetables for their sides.

What you need to know: BBQ Godfather has become a major contender for some of the best BBQ in Spring, TX.  Known for their Brisket, Pork Ribs and their Burnt Ends. A new crowd favorite and growing in popularity is their Beef Ribs, which will soon be available daily.

TRUCK # 5: OhMyGogi! / Paradise Gogi

Cuisine: Nathan Chang, owner of OhMyGogi! Houston’s first Korean Mexican fusion food truck. Key to our dishes is the Korean Beef known as Bulgogi.

Nathan along with his family and friends operate this small local business that’s been serving the people of Houston since 2011. They are very happy and excited to finally have the ability to serve our wonderful north side following without the long trek to the original location in Rice Village.

What You Need To Know: Bulgogi is brown sugar sweetened sliced rib eye with the right amount of savory ingredients to balance it. Popular Menu Items: OMG! Fries topped with Korean beef and Monterrey jack, Korean Tacos, Kimchi Quesadillas, Ramen Burgers (limited supplies) and Gogi Melts. OH My Gogi will also be serving all their favorites in veggie form replacing the meat option with locally Made Kimchi, which is delicious fermented Napa cabbage spiced up with garlic and Korean spices. New items coming for Spring, TX are local made cold treats such as half shell fruit sorbets, gourmet ice cream & popsicles.

TRUCK # 6 H-Town StrEATs presents Luv Me Tenders

Cuisine:  Luv Me Tenders is a new concept from chefs Jason Hill and Matt Opaleski , the guys that brought you H-town StrEATs, the bird house pop up and Hugs and Donuts. The concept is a collage of ideas from both Streats and the bird house. Luv Me Tenders uses Texas raised chicken tenders that CONTAIN NO PRESEARVITVES OR WATER SOLUTIONS. They are brined and then marinated. Always fresh never frozen.

What You Need To Know: Luv Me Tenders serves chicken tender baskets with fries and many house made sauces like ranch, honey mustard, buffalo, Thai chile and a special sauce that rotates.  Tacos, quesadillas, sandwiches, and grilled cheeses are made with the chicken tenders and create unique flavor combinations. Another specialty is the Half Baked Fries, which is basically loaded baked potato toppings on top of fries. Check out their menu on Facebook.  Luv Me Tenders will also be adding some of their fan favorites from their last 5 years in business. The two most popular new dishes are the Cordon Blu Grilled Cheese – chicken tenders, ham, Swiss, and Dijon mustard. The Kitchen Sink Taco – chicken tenders, lettuce, pico, nacho cheese, salsa verde and crispy bacon.

Truck # 7: Buzzles Shaved Ice

Cuisine: Shaved Ice with tons of flavor combinations. Darryl and Maria Garcia have been serving the Spring TX area for 7 years and have been amazed at the support they’ve gotten from the community. This will be the Garcias’ third location. Buzzle’s flagship location is at 4623 FM 2920 and their second location is at 5025 Louetta Rd. They had considered expanding into a shopping center storefront for their third location, but ultimately felt that their customers appreciated the “outdoor” feel of a roadside stand with picnic benches and music.

What you need to know:  This is the finest shaved ice in Spring, with a long time following from the local community.  Signature flavor is the Buzzles (a ultra creamy vanilla custard flavor). The three most popular flavors are Tigers Blood (a fruity coconut flavor), the classic Rainbow, and Wedding Cake with cream.

+ The Feast Of Artisans, a Farmers Market:

Fresh local produce, food and art. Feast of Artisans will be hosting a once a month market that will take place at Bernie’s Backyard.  In order to allow more vendors to participate, they have decided on a Wednesday evenings for their market at Bernie’s Backyard with hours of 4pm – 8pm.  They are still working on the exact start date.  However, the market does intend to be at the grand opening. Feast of Artisan’s will have a wide variety of interesting local vendors.  The list of vendors will be posted on their Facebook page as soon as all of the vendors are 100% confirmed.  

After starting and growing the Grogan’s Mill Farmers Market for four years (2007 – 2011), Lorraine Richardson (who started the market) wanted to expand on the idea of the framer’s market to include artisans of all varieties. That is how Feast of Artisans came about. Lorraine has added a new market manager, Megan Alejandrez, to help run this market.  She will be taking care of most of the day to day things as well as being on site to manage the market. 

What you need to know:  The market focuses on local producers, growers, farmers, crafters and artisans.  Supporting local small vendors is very important to them.  The idea is to have a place for local mom & pop vendors to sell their product to their local community. You can also find Feast of Artisans markets at the B-52 Brewery on the first Saturday of each month, 12-5pm, and at the Southern Star Brewery on the third Friday of each month, 5-9pm.
